The Carolina Master Chorale, Timothy Koch, music director, opens its 29th season with the debut program "War No More: Passionate Songs of Peace." The concert will feature many of musical history's most poignant works written in memorial commemoration of armed conflicts, and those who have been affected by them. The program will unfold in three parts, opening with great artistic works written in response to the 1515 French battle of Marignan, the Russian Revolution, the 1945 bombing of the city of Dresden, the internment of Jewish children at the Theresienstadt ghetto, the conflict in Northern Ireland, and 9/11.
The middle section of the concert features works about peace - settings of texts by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sara Teasdale, and St. Francis of Assisi, among others. The closing section presents works of promise with an emphasis on folk music and African-American spirituals. Featured composers and arrangers on the program include Sergei Rachmaninov, Jean Sibelius, Samuel Barber, Moses Hogan, Mack Wilberg of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Don Sloan of Coastal Carolina University.
