Our Silver Anniversary!

25th Concert Season (2007 – 2008)

Have you heard the Carolina Master Chorale recently? In June 2006, our production of Bizet's Carmen joined our earlier performances of Mendelssohn's Elijah and the Brahms Requiem on my career list of top ten conducting experiences! As Myrtle Beach evolves,

we are proud to join The Long Bay Symphony, the Theatre of the Republic and other area performing arts organizations in leading the charge toward a more dynamic cultural climate. History is now at the Beach! This season, we will secure a few more thrilling building blocks in our endeavor to construct a richer cultural future for all our residents and visitors. Won't you share them all with us? I hope to see your name on our donor list and your face in each audience!

The highlight of the season is sure to be a full-scale production of Giuseppe Verdi’s beloved opera, ‘La Traviata’, featuring the Long Bay Symphony, national and international opera stars, and production assistance from the Theatre of the Republic.  This follows a highly successful staging by the Carolina Master Chorale (CMC) of Georges Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ in June of 2006.  There are two scheduled performances at the Myrtle Beach High School Music and ArtsCenter; at 7pm on May 10, 2008 and at 3pm on May 11, 2008

In the first concert of the season, “Carolina On My Mind”, composer-in-residence Andrew Fowler offers a glorious new arrangement of Carolina native James Taylor’s most poignant songs.  This program is packed with colorful singing, powerful texts, dramatic beauty and virtuoso instrumental accompaniment.  This celebration of the history and beauty of the Carolinas will take place on October 27-28, 2007

On December 14th, 15th and 16th, the CMC presents its immensely popular and unique holiday program, accompanied by brass, harp and percussion.  Conrad Susa’s, ‘A Christmas Garland’ is one of today’s most popular arrangements of beloved carols.  The world premiere of Dr. Andrew Fowler’s ‘A Sacred Harp’ features Southern holiday tunes from generations past.

World renowned guest conductor Eph Ehly leads the CMC’s “Choral Festival by the Sea”- a festival chorus of over 200 from around the country- on March 1, 2008.  Guest choirs will also showcase their best for Myrtle Beach audiences.

Carolina Master Chorale Presents A LIVE Staged version of Verdi's "La Traviata"
The Carolina Master Chorale, under the baton of Music Director and Conductor Dr. Tim Koch, presents Giuseppe Verdi's beloved La Traviata, in semi-staged, concert version, Saturday, May 10 at 7 PM and Sunday, May 11, at 3 PM in the Myrtle Beach High School Auditorium.  Joining the Master Chorale are the Long Bay Symphony Orchestra, Charles Jones Evans, Music Director, and nine professional guest artists.

Soprano Shelley Jameson of New York headlines the star-laden cast in the virtuosic role of Violetta Valery, a famed Parisian courtesan around whose life and eventual death the drama unfolds.  Jameson has appeared in this role on tour throughout the U.S. with the New York City Opera.  She has also starred with many of the country's most prominent opera companies, including Los Angeles Opera, where she sang the role of Musetta in Puccini's La Boheme

Walter Cuttino will appear opposite Jameson in the famous tenor role of Alfredo Germont.  Cuttino serves as chair of the voice department at the University of South Carolina following a heralded career as lead tenor in many of Europe's most historic opera houses.

The production will also feature returning performers Brian Johnson, baritone, of Cleveland, Ohio and Joe Chappel, bass-baritone, of Brooklyn, New York, last heard together in 2005 in the Chorale's first opera production - Bizet's Carmen.  Additionally, five new and emerging artists will make their Myrtle Beach debuts in other principal roles.

La Traviata is third on Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America, behind only Madame Butterfly and La Boheme.  Opera audiences have experienced a national resurgence in the past year with the advent of live Metropolitan Opera performances broadcast in movie theaters nationwide.  Locally, "Cinemark at Coastal Grand" has carried the live and encore broadcasts.  San Francisco Opera has also announced that its productions soon will be released to theaters across the country.

First-timers and life-long opera lovers can join the opera craze by purchasing tickets for La Traviata.  Tickets, at $25 in advance, are available by calling the Carolina Master Chorale office at 843.444.5774, or online at www.carolinamasterchorale.com.  When calling for tickets, ask about the Gala Invitation-Only Recital, to be presented by the stars of La Traviata, Tuesday evening, May 6, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Myrtle Beach.
